1.0 Introduction

----------------

The USBSER.EXE driver package provides support for USB Serial Converters

on the OS/2 Operating System.

The USBSER.EXE file contains the following 4 files in a self-extracting

compressed format:

        - README.TXT    The file you are reading

        - USBSER.SYS    OS/2 USB Serial Converter Driver

        - USBSER.DDP    Device Driver Profile

        - TSTUSBC.EXE   USB Driver presence test

2.0 USB Serial Converter Support

--------------------------------

The USBSER.EXE driver package includes the OS/2 USB Serial Converter Driver

(USBSER.SYS) that supports the following types of vendor specific USB Serial

Converters:

        1. FTDI FT8U100AX chip asynchronous serial port 1

           (Future Technology Devices International Ltd.),

        2. Belkin F5U103 USB serial adapter,

        3. MCT USB to RS232 converter (Magic Control Technology Corp.).

There is a list of supported and tested USB Serial Converters:

        - USB Serial Converter on IBM Multi-Port USB Hub (part number 00N8216),

        - Belkin F5U103 USB Serial Adapter,

        - USB Serial Adapter on Belkin F5U116 USB Multi-Port Hub,

        - USB Serial Adapter on Belkin F5U120 USB DockStation,

        - D-Link DU-CS/DSB-S25 USB to Serial Converter Cable,

        - Belkin F5U109 USB PDA Adapter (IBM model name 10K3822).

2.1 Installation Instructions

-----------------------------

2.1.1 To use these USB Serial Converter Support files, you must expand

the USBSER.EXE file into its 4 component files by

      - opening an OS/2 window and

      - changing to the temporary directory where USBSER.EXE is stored and

      - typing USBSER at the OS/2 command prompt.

Once the USBSER.EXE file is expanded, please continue.

2.1.2 At the OS/2 command prompt, enter DDINSTAL command to open Device Driver

      Installation dialog.

2.1.3 Change Source directory to current (where 4 component files reside)

      by pressing "Change..." button.

2.1.4 Press "Install..." button to perform actual installation.

If USB Driver was not installed on the system you will see the message

"... This DDP file did not run."

You have to install USB basic driver stack before installing USBSER.SYS.

2.1.5 Verify the USBSER.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file and add/change its

parameters if necessary. The USBSER.SYS driver accepts one CONFIG.SYS

      line parameter:

/V        Verbose mode to display driver information.

2.1.6 This completes the installation procedure.

You can install any other USB device drivers and after that

      you must reboot the system.

2.2 Un-Install Instructions

---------------------------

2.2.1 Delete the USBSER.SYS line from CONFIG.SYS file.

2.2.2 Delete the USBSER.SYS file from \OS2\BOOT directory.

2.2.3 Shutdown and then reboot system.
